Thirteen years ago, acclaimed actress Connie Britton made a life-changing decision: she adopted her son, Yoby, from Ethiopia. At the time, Britton was 45, single, and at the height of her career. The journey into motherhood was both exhilarating and daunting, especially as she balanced the demands of solo parenting with a thriving acting career.
Britton’s transition into motherhood coincided with her role on ABC’s Nashville, which required her to relocate to a new city where she had no established support system. “I had this brand-new baby suddenly in my arms on my own,” she recalled. “I didn’t know at that time how challenging it was going to be to go into a very ambitious job and role and be a brand-new mother and have to leave my child at home every single day and have no support system.”
Despite the challenges, Britton found strength in her new role. She embraced the term “single mom,” recognizing the resilience and dedication it represented. “I went into [that chapter of my life] a little bit blindly, not really fully anticipating what it is to be a single mom and how difficult that is, and what you’re taking on in doing that,” she admitted.
Her experiences inspired her to create The Motherhood, an unscripted series on the Hallmark Channel that premiered on May 5, 2025. The show aims to support and celebrate single mothers by fostering a sense of community. Each of the six episodes features a different single mom receiving guidance from experts in parenting, home design, and fashion. The concept echoes the uplifting and transformative format of Queer Eye and is produced by the same company, Scout Productions.
Britton’s goal with The Motherhood is not only to entertain but also to build a supportive community and highlight the everyday heroism of single mothers. She hopes the series will spark a deeper, more positive cultural conversation about single parenting. “I hope that it will change the narrative about single moms, and actually put single moms more in the forefront of our cultural understanding and our cultural empathy,” she explained.
Through candid conversations and expert insights, The Motherhood provides practical advice and emotional support to single moms, fostering a community of shared experiences and mutual encouragement. Britton’s own journey serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of single mothers everywhere.
